Christmas 2015 - (Part V Wednesday through Christmas)

Wednesday, 23 December: We woke up to near blizzard conditions with heavy snow and wind, but that only lasted about an hour. Later that morning we went shopping at Deseret Books and Target.  Peter and his brothers plus their spouses were to sing in a talent show at the family get together Christmas Eve, so they had a rehearsal about midday. All of us joined in on Pentatonix arrangement of That’s Christmas to Me. I really enjoyed that. That evening we went to the other side of town to meet up with Lorin and his kids for pizza at PizzaRev in West Valley City. Pizza was made to order and cost the same no matter what you put on it. It was pretty good. After dinner, we swung by Leatherbees for ice cream.

Thursday, 24 December: Went shopping trying to find colored pencils for Kira, but mainly hung out. I had wanted to go to Hill AFB aviation museum in Ogden. JoAnne would have been able to see the Great Salt Lake on the drive up there. But alas, it was closed Christmas Eve. That evening, Jessi and Peter went to a family Christmas party. Kira, JoAnne and I stayed at PB&J House and watched Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation.

Friday, 25 December – Christmas: We woke up to a white Christmas with 5 inches of new snow on the ground. Jessi and Peter headed to Peter’s parents’ house around 7:30a for their traditional Christmas morning activities. We were invited to breakfast and lunch, so we jumped in Kira’s car and followed about an hour later. Paul and Kylee and left an easel that they needed, so we stuck that in the car, plus Jessi’s camera. The drive was somewhat challenging. Salt Lake City has an amazing snow plow program (neighborhood had been plowed by 7am!) Charlotte would have been shut down for a week with this snow and Salt Lake City barely slowed down. But the wind was blowing and streets on west side of town where Peter’s parents lived where drifting as fast as they could plow. Kira did a great job of getting us there.  We shared and amazing breakfast and lunch with them. Breakfast was with Peter’s parents (Julie and Rex) and their sons and families.  After breakfast we just visited and watched some Christmas movies on Hallmark Channel. For lunch, some aunts and uncles joined us. After lunch, Kira, JoAnne and I headed back to the PB&J house. When we got there, we shoveled the driveway.  Utah powder snow is significantly lighter than the snow cement we get in the Carolinas.  That afternoon we watch the Christmas movie North Pole. After Jessi and Peter came home we watched Muppet Christmas Carol.  That evening we packed the bags for your return trip that would start the next morning.

Christmas 2015 (Part IV - Tuesday)

Tuesday, 22 December: We woke up to a significant new snow fall. The plan was to go to Heber, Utah to ride the Polar Express on the Heber Valley Railroad (AKA Heber Creeper). Tickets had already been paid for and were not refundable.  But Utah DOT dashed any hope of that when the put chain restrictions on I-80 going up to Heber, and on US-189 which would be Matt and family’s route from there to I-15 in Provo going back to Vegas. (We did find out that the tickets could be used any time in the next year so maybe they will still get used.) This is the only activity we had planned that fell through, which considering the weather, wasn't too bad. We kind of hung out for a while, but with the road conditions the way they were, Matt and family got on the road heading south for a night in Vegas with Mike and Kelly and Grandpa Ed. (BTW – they made the trip with no problem.) PB&J, Kira, JoAnne and I went to see Star Wars that afternoon and really enjoyed it.  That evening we went to Pioneer Village at the This Is the Place monument.  On way over to the village, in snowy conditions we about got run off the road intentionally several times by a lunatic in an SUV. But we enjoyed the snow and the atmosphere of the village. Jessi and Peter tried the Virginia reel dance, and we had donuts and hot chocolate. We road a "train" around teh village. (Real trains don't have rubber tires on them and go on roads!) On the way home we tried to stop at CafĂ© Zupas, but they were closed for a Christmas party. Roads were getting pretty slick so we went home and had leftovers.

Christmas 2015 (Part III - Monday)

Monday, 21 December. Monday morning we bundled up and went to Gardner Village for the Elf Display and scavenger hunt. “Gardner Village in West Jordan, Utah contains the outlines of the once bustling early Utah pioneer mill industry and history. What remains today is a cluster of retail specialty shops located in restored cabins, houses and buildings nestled adjacent to the Gardner Mill.” You print out a list of elves doing various things, then go find them. At the end you get some salt water taffy. Temperatures were pretty cool and there was a wind that made it colder. But we had a good time anyway. Afterwards, we went to Kneaders for lunch (and carrot cake for Matt!)

After an afternoon break for naps and such, we were off again. This time back to the TRAX station and downtown. We had 5:30p reservations at the Garden Restaurant in the Joseph Smith Memorial Building (formerly Hotel Utah), and we were going to visit City Creek Mall, and the highlight, the lights on temple square. We were concerned about forecast rain and had purchased some ponchos, but as it turned out, we didn’t need them. Temperatures were in the low 40's dipping into the 30’s before we when home. We met up with Kira’s friend Lorin and his kids and had hot chocolate and Kneaders in the mall.
