Martha or Mary
Vanessa and I were talking one day about the story of Martha and Mary and Christ. We both decided that we were probably Martha's. We both are doers and not sitters.I don't sit still well, so sitting is not something I would have been doing. I would also have been like Martha in asking why Mary wasn't helping me out--I just like for things to be Fair. Yes, I know life isn't fair, but I still want it to be. Anyway, I was reading this story the other day in the scriptures again and somewhat beating myself up for being a Martha. I was also thinking of the people I knew who were a Mary and what good people they are. Then the thought came to me that there have to be both Marthas and Marys in life. If we were all Marys then nothing much would get done, because we would all be sitting around doing wonderful things like scripture study and watching conference again. These are great things to do, so I am not knocking them, but there has to be someone to do the work too. For example, when I was Relief Society President, I wanted to be doing something on Sunday during our meeting and also at our RS activities. There were things that needed to be done to make the program and activities run smoothly and I liked to be doing them. Another example is at Linger Longers; someone has to do the setting up and cleaning up. These are Martha things! These are the things I like to do. I am not much of a sit down person as I said earlier. I have come to the conclusion that we have to have both Marthas and Marys in this life. I probably need to work on being more of a Mary sometimes, but I don't need to feel guilty about being a Martha either. I think the Lord loves us and knows our strengths and weaknesses and understands our hearts. I don't think I will feel quite as bad about being a Martha as I have before.
